The Supreme Court has quashed the Union government’s decision to include the Jat community in the OBC list for providing the benefits of reservation.
The Narendra Modi government had supported UPA regime’s decision to include the jat community in the central OBC list for providing reservation and refuted the allegation in the Supreme Court that it was done to gain political mileage in the general elections.
The Centre contended that the Cabinet took into account the findings of a report of expert committee constituted by Indian Council for Social Science and Research (ICSSR) before taking the decision.
Caste, though a prominent factor, can’t be the sole factor to decide backwardness, said the Supreme Court judegement. The Court added that inclusion of politically organised castes like Jat in OBC list is not good for other backward classes.
