Andrzej Duda: He has been elected as the President of Poland. His victory reflected voters’ frustration that Poland’s new-found prosperity was not being more evenly shared.
Muhammadu Buhari: He has been elected as President of Nigeria. He won the first opposition victory over a sitting President in the nation’s history.
Droupadi Murmu: 58-year-old tribal leader from Mayurbhanj district, she has been appointed as Governor of Jharkhand. She is the first woman leader from Odisha to be appointed as Governor.
J.P. Rajkhowa: He has been appointed as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh.
Tathagata Roy: He has been appointed as the Governor of Tripura.
V. Shanmuganthan: He has been appointed as the Governor of Meghalaya.
Lt. General (Retd.) Nirbhay Sharma: He has been transferred and appointed as Governor of Mizoram for the remainder of his term.
Dr Syed Ahmed: He has been transferred and appointed as Governor of Manipur for the remainder of his term.
J. Jayalalitha: She has been re-elected as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu following her acquittal in a disproportionate assets case.
Achal Kumar Jyoti: A former Chief Secretary during the tenure of Narendra Modi as Gujarat Chief Minister, he has been appointed as the Election Commissioner of India, filling one of the two vacancies in the three-member body.
K.V. Kamath: Private banker, he has been appointed as the first Chairman of BRICS bank. The BRICS—Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa—had agreed to set up the $100 billion development bank in July 2014, in a step toward reshaping the Western-dominated international financial system. It was agreed then that the New Development Bank, which will fund infrastructure projects in developing nations, would be based in Shanghai. It would be headed by an Indian for a first five-year term, followed by a Brazilian and then a Russian.
Dr S. Christopher: Director of Centre for air borne systems and a distinguished scientist, he has been appointed as Director-General of Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) for a two years term.
Dr G.S. Reddy: Director, Research Centre IMARAT, he has been appointed as Scientific adviser Defence Minister of India, for a two years term.

DISTINGUISHED VISITORS

Gen. Phung Quang Than: Defence Minister of Vietnam. He briefed Prime Minister Modi about defence and security related developments in the India-Vietnam bilateral relationship.
Ursula von der Leyen: Defence Minister of Germany. She came on a three-day visit during which she seeked to deepen bilateral ties, besides focussing on regional and international security and defence issues.

DIED

B.B. King: Guitarist who took the blues from rural juke joints to the mainstream and influenced a generation of rock guitarists from Eric Clapton to Stevie Ray Vaughan, he died on 14 May 2015 at age 89. He will forever be linked with the Gibson guitars he named Lucille.
John Forbes Nash Jr: The brilliant Princeton University mathematician whose life story was the subject of the film “A Beautiful Mind”, he was killed with his wife Alicia in a crash on the New Jersey Turnpike. He wash was 86.

MILESTONES

Gagan Toor: He was among five winners who won in a contest held by NASA to name five identified craters on Mercury. The name he suggested was after Enheduanna, a princess poet of the sumerian city of Ur in ancient Mesopotamian civilization.The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has announced that Enheduanna and four other names — Karsh, Carolan, Kulthum and Rivera — have been selected to name five craters on Mercury.
Karan Jerath: An 18-year-old Indian-American boy, he has been awarded the prestigious Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award in the United States for developing a machine which can quickly stop undersea oil spills.
Latha Venkataraman: Indian-American scientist, she led a team of scientists from the Columbia University School of Engineering which has developed a method to create working diodes which comprise only one molecule. The scientists have claimed that the single-molecule diodes have the ability to perform better than the previous iterations of nanoscale diodes.
